Preparing for a new puppy

What type of kennel should I use?

We prefer the transport/pet taxi/carrier type over the wire kennel. These are more natural and den-like. They also don't damage the walls and floor and are easier to clean. The crate should only be enough space for your puppy to lie down and stand up and turn around. Too much space can result in the puppy having crate accidents. In most cases, the medium size will fit our cavapoo puppies. For whoodles or larger cavapoo large size would be ideal. Most of the time you can purchase these used from Facebook marketplace.

Where should my puppy sleep?

In a crate away from your room, it's important for your puppy to learn to cope with being alone. The snuggle puppy and a sound machine can be helpful tools to encourage sleep.

What bones or chew toys should i give my puppy?

Dream bone makes a wonderful non-rawhide bone. Kong toy is also helpful to keep your puppy busy. Puppies go through a chewing/teething stage around 5 to 6 months.

What treats should I give my puppy?

For the first few days please refrain from giving your puppy any treats. A new home can be a difficult adjustment. With new changes in the puppy's life, it can take a toll on its digestive system. Once your puppy is settled in, then add soft tiny training treats. All beef hot dogs broken into small pieces are a favorite around here.

Leashes, harnesses, collars?

Most training facilities prefer a 6 ft leather leash. Collars are great unless you have a child that is being too rough. Amazon sells a soft leather coat with a place for contact information. Harness are great if you have children walking the puppy. If your puppy is pulling excessively, you can try a Halti. Most puppies need time to get used to this product as it goes around their nose.

What about microchipping?

At this time we do not offer to microchips. The needle used for placement is extremely large. Most vets offer microchipping at the time of the spay/neuter. This is an excellent time to get one. The puppy will be asleep when they implant the chip. This is typically placed between the shoulder blades.

What is included with my puppy?

Each puppy gets dewormed, distemper/parvovirus combo vaccine, and a health examination. We send home their health records. We give each puppy a blanket that smells like mom and siblings to help them adjust to their new home. We can offer a small starter bag of food (Purina One Smart Blend healthy puppy formula) available on request.

What type of food should I buy?

We feed Purina One Smart Blend healthy puppy formula. We ask that you feed this brand for at least 2 weeks before switching to a new diet. This will help the puppy adjust to their new home.
