Top questions to ask a breeder

Can we meet the parents?

Yes! Since we are a small breeder, we do not own the dads. You will be welcomed into our home to visit the mom when picking up your puppy. We will do video calls anytime so you can see the puppies and where they will be raised!

Have health tests been performed on the parents?

All of our moms visit the vet for checkups each year. We also have genetic test results listed here on our website (View)

How long have you been breeding? What is your experience with this breed?

7 years! We have been working with poodles the whole time! We chose poodles because of allergy issues with shedding dogs and how smart they are! They are also great with our kids!

Are you licensed as a breeder?

We have worked with Gooddog.com and have been certified as a “good breeder” through their program. We do not own enough dogs to be licensed through the state of Illinois.

How Many Dogs Do You Own?

Gardner Lane Puppies consists of 4 different families and 2 guardian homes. For a total of 8 moms. We believe that every dog deserves to have a loving, forever home. All of our dogs are part of our family and live in our homes rather than kennels so that we know they are getting as much attention as possible!

How do you socialize your puppies?

We raise the puppies in our home! They are exposed to many sounds, smells, and hugs throughout their day. Each home has children that help love on and socialize each puppy.

Are the puppies up to date on vaccinations?

Yes, each puppy visits the vet at 7 weeks for a health check and vaccination against Parvo and Distemper.

Will each puppy be dewormed when we pick them up?

Yes! We do all we can to make sure your puppy will not pick up any worms along the way. I will say we cannot guarantee them to be “worm free” because they are so common. Here is the deworming schedule your puppy will be on.

Pyrantel Pamoate will be given at 2, 4, and 6 weeks old.

Safeguard Dewormer will be given for 3 consecutive days right before your puppy leaves at 8 weeks old.

Do you supply a veterinarian-issued health certificate?

Yes, we give the puppy checkup report from the vet visit at 7 weeks. This will show all that was examined and that the puppy is healthy.

Do you provide a health guarantee and a contract?

Our health guarantee: We take our puppy’s health seriously, we start with health testing and clearing all the parents of genetic disease. We take all of our puppies to our vet at 7 weeks for a health examination. We are counting on our vet to notice any health issues at this point. Once the puppy is in your care. We ask you to take the puppy to your vet within the first 48 hours. If your vet noticed any congenital health issues we will need to be contacted immediately and the puppy can be returned, or a partial or full refund can be issued depending on the severity of the situation. We are not responsible for any veterinary medical bills, medicine or transportation cost once the puppy is in its new home.

Most breeders that offer 1- and 2-year health guarantees are based on a "replacement" puppy or impossible contingencies. We are a small breeder and we never want to be put into the position to be forced to breed our dogs to provide a "replacement" puppy. Often other breeders ask for you to give the dogs expensive vitamins, a certain brand of food or spay or neuter at certain times, vaccines at certain times, or else the guarantee is no longer valid. We are dog breeders, not veterinarians, we feel that the new owners and their veterinarians should discuss and decide on how to provide the best health care for their pets.

Do either of your parent dogs (or their puppies that you are aware of) have a history of ear infections, allergies, bloat, or any other health conditions?

No! None of our moms or puppies have had any issues!

When will you be able to take the puppy home?

We believe that it is important for the puppy to learn all it can from its mom. We keep the puppies till 8 weeks old. Since we are not a “large” kennel we cannot keep puppies past 8 weeks.

How can we contact you after picking up the puppy?

We love to stay in contact with past puppy owners through email! We always defer to your local vet or trainer but will do our best to offer help and support.

What requirements do you have for people looking to get one of your puppies?

We have an application process to make sure each puppy is going to a loving home.

Will, you take back the dog if I’m no longer able to keep them?

Our goal is that your puppy will find its forever home with you. However, we understand some unforeseen situations may arise where the only option is rehoming your puppy. Here are a few options we offer at Gardner Lane Puppies for puppy returns. Option A: You can Return your puppy and we will re-home your puppy for you. No refund will be given. Option B: If you need to find a new home for your puppy, we can help post the puppy on our website. This will limit the number of homes the puppy is transferred to and is hopefully less traumatic for the puppy. We will connect you with potential adopters and you can arrange transfer/payment. We cannot guarantee the placement of the puppy.

Have you ever turned down a sale?

Yes!! We need to be able to easily work with the future puppy parent and they need to be able to work with us! In some cases, it became clear the applicant was not a good fit. We really care about our puppies and want them to have the best life they can!

How many times do you breed your mama dogs before retiring them?

The number of litters is decided case by case and it depends if our veterinarian approves the mom for breeding. The new studies have shown a decrease in infection and it is better for the mom to be bred every heat (after the first 2 cycles) until she is retired.

What happens to the moms after you retire them?

For retirement, we have had a range of keeping to rehoming to our friends and family members. That being said we have had 3 retire so far and only have 5 adult breeding females between the 3 families of Gardner Lane. We have additional guardian home dogs that we have not yet bred.
